Al B. Benson III, MD was inaugurated as the second President of the International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology at the 2007 Gastrointestinal Oncology Conference. He succeeds Richard M. Goldberg, MD who now serves as a member of the ISGIO Scientific Board.

 
Dr. Benson directs and coordinates the activities of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center's (RHLCCC) Clinical Investigations Program, which strengthens interdisciplinary exchange among clinical specialties and enhances collaborative efforts among Northwestern clinicians and investigators involved in basic cancer research.
 
Dr. Benson is chair of the RHLCCC Clinical Protocol Scientific Review and Monitoring Committee (CPSRMC) and the Data Monitoring Subcommittee (DMS) and principal investigator of Northwestern's Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) grant, which includes clinical trial activities at the University's network of affiliated hospitals. He also is chair of the ECOG Gastrointestinal Committee and Data Monitoring Committee and directs the program in gastrointestinal cancer at the RHLCCC and NMH. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology's (ASCO) Program Committee (Gastrointestinal Subcommittee), member of the Task Force on Quality of Cancer Care, and the co-chair of ASCO's Colorectal Cancer Guidelines Subcommittee.
 

He serves as President of the Illinois Medical Oncology Society. Dr. Benson's research is primarily in the areas of gastrointestinal cancer clinical trials, cancer clinical trials, biologic therapies, biochemical modulation, phase I cancer clinical trials and cancer chemoprevention. His research in biologics, cancer therapy, and cancer prevention has been awarded funding from a variety of sources including the NIH. He has extensive interest in translational research. For example, he has received NCI funding to study thymidylate synthase expression and NCI funding for early phase wrok in chemoprevention including prevention of GI malignancies. Dr. Benson also has worked on a number of translational research projects conducted by the ECOG GI Committee.
